How we handle it. After your initial deposit, Edith sends you 2–3 real flight options from your city aligned with your surgery date. You decide: we book it for you, or you buy directly with the airline. No commissions, no markup — either way you pay the airline's actual fare.

Documents & insurance

For US and Canadian citizens entering Mexico for medical purposes, the requirements are simple — but insurance is worth a careful look.

Required documents

  • Passport: valid for the duration of your stay. Mexico does not enforce the 6-month rule.
  • Visa: not needed for tourist or medical visits under 180 days for US and Canadian citizens.
  • FMM card: filled out on the plane or at the airport on arrival. Keep it and surrender at departure.
  • Customs: standard declaration. Declare anything valued over $500 USD.

Recommended insurance

  • Travel medical insurance: covers emergencies unrelated to your planned surgery (slips, illness, medevac).
  • Complication coverage (optional): some plans cover unexpected costs from elective surgery abroad. Ask your carrier directly.
  • Wellum does not include insurance in our package. We recommend WorldNomads, IMG Global, or Allianz Travel. Edith can share current quotes.

Your domestic US/Canadian health insurance rarely covers elective surgery abroad. Verify before you travel.

What to bring

Two lists: what you send to the surgeon ahead of your trip, and what you pack in your bag.

Send 2 weeks ahead

  • Medical history: allergies, conditions, medications. Print our form, fill by hand, send it back scanned.
  • Prior medical records: labs, imaging, EKG if you have cardiac history.
  • Clinical photos: for aesthetic procedures, photos of the area from multiple angles.

Pack in your bag

  • Comfortable loose clothing: post-op you won't be able to wear tight garments over the surgical area.
  • Your daily medications: + 1 extra week. Keep them in your carry-on bag.
  • Power adapter: not needed. Mexico uses 110V with US-style plugs.
  • International plan or eSIM: Airalo offers Mexico eSIM from $5 USD.
  • Card + some cash: USD accepted in many places, pesos preferred. ATMs are plentiful.
  • Paper copy of medical records: physical backup of what you sent digitally.
